The City of Boroondara turns thirty in 2024. To celebrate this milestone, members of the Camberwell Camera Club are collaborating on a year-long project to capture images that represent Boroondara in all its diversity.

The ‘Year in the Life of Boroondara’ project aims to bring together photographs of the people, community life, arts, culture and natural environment as well as the structures and infrastructure that make Boroondara such a great place to live, work and play.

The primary outcome of the project will be the publication of a book of photographs that we hope will become a significant historical document. The Club is also exploring options to publicly display the photographs in 2025.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the Camberwell Camera Club?

The Camberwell Camera Club Inc is a community organisation established in 1953. It currently has about 150 active members and meets weekly at 552 Burke Road, Camberwell. The club arranges a variety of activities (guest speakers, workshops, competitions, outings and weekends away) to inspire, motivate and educate its members to maximise the enjoyment they get from their photography.

Why is the club undertaking the project?

The Club arranges a variety of activities across the year to grow members’ skills and increase interaction with the community. We see this ‘Year in the Life’ project as a way of giving back to the community while doing something we love, namely taking photographs.  The Club undertakes other community-focused activities. For example, once a year it runs a pop-up portrait studio at the Camberwell Trash and Treasure Market. Cub members have also worked with a local nursing home to take images of residents and their families at Christmas.

Who are the people taking the photographs?

They are club members who have volunteered to participate in the project. They have become involved in order to develop their own photographic skills and to contribute to the production and publication of the ‘Year in the Life’ book.

What does the project aim to deliver?

The primary outcome of the ‘Year in the Life of Boroondara’ project will be the publication of a book of photographs that represent Boroondara in all its diversity. We are also aiming to hold a gallery exhibition which would feature selected photographs from the project.

How is the project being funded?

Club members are volunteering their time to organise the project and take photographs. Sponsorship is being sought to offset the cost of producing the book and the expenses associated with printing and displaying photographs at an exhibition.

Don’t I have to be asked before someone takes my photograph?

As a common courtesy we encourage members to introduce themselves before taking pictures of people, but this is not always possible, especially when time is of the essence or in crowded situations. While most members will try to make an effort to establish a connection, generally speaking anyone is allowed to take photographs in a public place without seeking permission. This extends to taking photographs of buildings, sites and people.
