April Guest Speaker - Glynn Lavender

On Friday 24th April, many members attended a Zoom seminar by Glynn Lavender, one of Melbourne’s most experienced photography trainers and portraiture experts.

Ken Spence welcomed everyone to this special pop up event, which included camera club members from the 10 Club Portrait Competition (Berwick, Camberwell, Caulfield, Doncaster, Eastern Suburbs, Knox, Maroondah, Melbourne, Warragul and Waverley), and from Monash Gallery of Art. At the peak of the presentation, an astonishing 148 people were logged into the Zoom seminar!

Glynn Lavender is a professional photographer who has been in the industry for over 30 years. He has a passion for people photography, and runs photography workshops in Australia & the US, as well as leading photography tours to countries such as India, Myanmar and Vietnam. Glynn is a passionate educator whose greatest strength is his ability to simplify the technical side of photography and break things down into easy to implement skills that will improve photography. During the evening Glynn shared a large number of his amazing images, and broke them down into the elements that, in his opinion, made them good images.

Glynn discussed his processes for shooting both subject-only portraits and travel/street portraits, and explained that photographers should develop their own processes. There are three categories of portraits: single person, group, and abstract. In portrait photography, it is important to engage with the subject and ask to take their picture – the worst that can happen is they say no. Glynn’s other tips for taking portraits include: eliminate background distractions, use available light where possible, try using different lenses as they can dramatically change an image, and finally – keep it simple.

Many thanks to Glynn for his very entertaining presentation, and along with his incredible photos, made for a memorable evening. He also kindly made his presentation available to club members, which will be a document that can be referred back to time and time again.
